Learn how to “invest” from Fantasy Premier League ?
Most readers know I follow the Premier League and my kids are Manchester United fans (don't ask me how) 😂
I have watched two premier league matches and visited 3 stadiums. Flashback —>
Obviously, the biggest headline news this week was "Ronaldo is going to Manchester City" to "he is going home to Manchester United", and in the process, sent the ManU fans from hell 👿 to heaven 😇 in 24 hours.
In any case, it is going to make this season premier league less predictable and more exciting now that Liverpool is back to full strength, Lukaku plugged the misfiring Chelsea (and he went home too). Spurs didn't lose their best player and Manchester United having one of the oldest but best player on the planet (not counting the few shrewd transfers they made). The pressure is definitely on Ole to deliver this season.
Fantasy Premier League ("FPL")
I started playing FPL last season from Game week 2 and my kids joined me from Game week 8. I can't tell you the number of noob mistakes we made but we totally enjoyed the game, trying to manage our teams and outfox each other.
This season we are going to try to win the first prize but I have to warn you in advance that it is super difficult and will probably make you "less loyal" to your team and start cheering the players you have in the rival teams.
How the game works?
The game involves you becoming the manager and with a $100m budget, you have to assemble a squad of 15 players comprising 2 Goalkeepers, 5 Defenders, 5 Midfielders and 3 Forwards.
From the 20 clubs in Premier League - You can choose at most 3 players from one club and you can play in any formation you like but at the minimal you must have 1 GK and at least 3 DEF, 3 MID and 1 FWD in any formations.
You will be awarded points based on how your players performed in their roles. Example - Goalkeepers and defenders earn points by having cleaning sheets and more points (than Forwards) if they score goals. If you really need to know, the link is here.
How FPL imparts investing or trading lessons ?
Here are the few investing lessons you can impart to your kids through the game.
1. Investment capital is limited - you only have $100m to invest and you can't always buy all the players you want to create a dream team. Similarly in life, your investment capital is limited and you need to save up when young.
2. Investment strategy - What strategy do you want to adopt. Do you go for the tried and test blue chips players (often at high valuation) or can you find gems hidden among the smaller teams (small caps). There are trade offs. You can have 15 medium rated players or you can have 3 star and 12 mediocre players.
3. Diversification is important - don't just put all eggs in one basket (i.e. 3 players from one team) as many times they may not perform to your prediction and some diversification is necessary as not all teams may play each week when there are postponement or Champion League matches.
4. Portfolio monitoring is important - it is not a buy and forget strategy. You need to constant monitor the performance of your portfolio (players) to make sure they are healthy and performing. If investments are not performing (i.e. injured players) then it is time to rebalance the portfolio (ie swop them out).
5. You need help sometimes (wildcards) - there are 2 wildcards in each half of the season where you can use it to change your entire team. Use them wisely. Similarly, sometimes in good years, you get good bonuses to help you augment your portfolio. Use those bonuses wisely 😂
6. Plan ahead for your investments - you have one free transfer each week and you can only carry forward a maximum of one transfer. You need to plan a few weeks ahead so that you can have the best players you need for the fixtures. Similarly, you need to plan ahead in life, to have the capital and make the right investments to get out of the rat 🐀 race. Last but not least,
7. Past performance is not indicative of future performance - Some players that have performed last season may not performed well this season due to change in form, tactics or coach. Similarly, your investments may not do well in future even if they have done well for you in the past. (vice versa).
So here you go. Investing lessons from playing FPL.
Maybe I should start a mini FPL league next season for my fans base, so go ahead and use this season to pay school fees and learn the ins and outs of the game and we can have a mini Mr. IPO league in 2022.
Here is my game week 1 stats! Enjoy the weekend and it may be time to use the first wildcard when Ronaldo is home!
I scored 101 points in GW1.
Happy FPLing and learn some investing/trading lessons in the process. 😆
